How to Care for Your New Floors: A Homeowner's Guide
New floors are a significant investment — and with the right maintenance habits, they'll look great for decades. Here's what you need to know, organized by flooring type.
Hardwood Floors
- •Sweep or dust-mop daily to prevent grit from scratching the finish
- •Use only hardwood-specific cleaners (Bona, Method Squirt+Mop) — never steam mops or wet mops
- •Place felt pads under all furniture legs — refresh them every 6 months
- •Keep indoor humidity between 35–55% to prevent gapping or cupping (Georgia summers can push this)
- •Area rugs in high-traffic zones significantly extend finish life
- •Refinish every 7–10 years under normal wear — sooner if finish loses sheen
LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank)
- •Sweep or vacuum regularly — grit is the #1 enemy of the wear layer
- •Damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner (avoid soap-based cleaners that leave residue)
- •Never use abrasive scrubbers, wax, or polish — they damage the wear layer
- •Use felt pads under furniture and appliances
- •Avoid rubber-backed mats — they can permanently discolor vinyl over time
- •LVP is virtually maintenance-free, but protecting the wear layer prolongs its life
Tile & Stone
- •Sweep or vacuum frequently — sand and grit scratch tile glazing over time
- •Mop with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner — avoid vinegar (it etches grout and stone)
- •Seal grout annually to prevent staining and moisture penetration
- •Natural stone (travertine, marble) requires stone-specific sealers — not general tile sealers
- •Clean grout with a stiff brush and baking soda paste for deep cleaning
Carpet
- •Vacuum at least once a week — twice in high-traffic areas
- •Address spills immediately: blot (never rub), work from the outside in
- •Professional steam cleaning every 12–18 months removes deep-set soil and extends life
- •Use a quality carpet pad — it doubles carpet life and improves feel
- •Rotate furniture periodically to prevent permanent compression patterns
